Now the babies are 15 days old and there is a lot of activity in the nest. Today the first baby was in the food dish trying to eat seeds. Now that they are older their diet can be supplemented with a little soy milk from your fingertips. This will help mom get a little break especially in a large litter. By day 16 the dumbo babies' ears are almost perpendicular to their heads. The babies are spending less time sleeping and more time crawling around their enviroment. They are becoming quite strong now. The hands and feet clutching well. Mom is trying real hard to feed her growing offspring. Luckily the babies are getting old enough to drink without a nipple. It can be pretty messy giving them soy milk. Now at day 17 it is time to move them from the large aquarium that they were born in to a bigger area. All they had to play in was a little barn and they have outgrown that in just a matter of days. These babies will live in a small meshed 3 level cage with their mom. The extra room and levels will stimulate them. They are very playful now and ready for some room. Now that they are 18 days old the babies are eating everything in sight. They can now climb the cage sides. Their coordination is increasing daily. They are starting to spend more time wake and they are roaming further and further. As you can see in photos 19 and 20 it is easy to see which of the babies are dumbo (19) and which are standard (20). As their appearances become more distinctive so do their personalities. Some are shy and don't like to be photographed . Others have quite outgoing personalities. And there is always one comic in each litter Each rat becomes more individual daily. |
